Biography, presentation of artistic approach:
Born on November 15, 1984 in Tours, Alexis Debeuf lives and works in Hérouville-Saint-Clair.
Alexis Debeuf uses domestic objects, clothing, furniture, tools to which he applies grafts, changes of scale or transformations to modify their original nature. Voluntarily playing the role of a balancing act between the fields of sculpture and design, his objects reveal new uses, often absurd, even grotesque. Like an inventor or a do-it-yourselfer, he creates assemblages that respond to problems that are not problems. This is the case, for example, of his Extension, a true portable roof and framework taking the form of an umbrella. He tries, searches, and finds shapes as if by accident. The serendipity of his discoveries reveals a humour that could easily be compared to slapstick, old cartoons or jokes and tricks. For example, in Autoritratto, the handle of a rake reveals a true self-portrait of the artist, as if he had violently bumped into it after having accidentally stepped on it. This amused or tongue-in-cheek approach to the world, however, reflects an alert look at his environment. This is the case, for example, with his fake surveillance cameras placed in the public space and made from plastic birds, normally used by hunters to bait game. Or again with the action entitled Bon vent, for which the artist has invited anyone to entrust him with their C.V. so that he can hang them on helium-filled balloons and diffuse them in the air, as in the meanders of the administration.
