Leticia MARTINEZ-PÉREZ - Lot 70
Leticia MARTINEZ-PÉREZ Triquitri Year of production: 2016 Material: earthenware, plush tail and hoop Dimensions: variable Biography, presentation of artistic approach: Born on 15 July 1984 in Zaragoza, Spain, Leticia Martínez Pérez lives and works in Normandy, Paris and Madrid. Leticia Martínez Pérez works the ridiculous in the interstice between noble and vernacular culture. Oscillating between references to kitsch and art history, she creates a whimsical and burlesque imaginary coupled with reality. The artist is interested in the shifts and encounters that are created when tradition and modernity intersect. Her work is nourished by folklore and popular culture, with which she maintains an uncomplicated relationship. Leticia Martínez Pérez plays with codes and their ambiguity, navigating between lightness and satire, vulgarity and elegance. This allows her to question our relationship with objects and the notion of 'taste'. It is important to underline the playful and sensual dimension of her work. Through the staging of her objects and characters, she recreates a disturbing carnival, as voluptuous as it is innocent. Art becomes a game board, an opportunity to cross hybrid forms resulting from diverse universes, both real and fantasized. In her work, the idea of disguise and transformation emerges. Her objects can be activated during performances in order to question and shift the status of the work and its use. There is an acidic festive element in the dialogue between her sculptures and her performers that breathes life and humour into her objects. The result is an art as light as it is ironic, where she enjoys creating a complicity with the viewer.
