Louise ABBÉMA (1858-1927) Portrait of Marie Joseph François Mahérault, 1888 Oil on mahogany panel, signed, dated "June 5, 1888" and dedicated "To Madame de Najac, her friend" in the upper right corner H_35 cm - W_26,5 cm (gilded stuccoed wood frame, as is) A handwritten label on the back with a biography of Mahérault and a mention of the provenance of the work: "Secretary General of the Ministry of War, State Counselor, Commander of the Legion of Honor, died in Paris on June 5, 1879 in his 85th year. Mahérault published the catalog of Gavarni's engraved work in 1873. His catalog raisonné of the work of Moreau le Jeune was published after his death by his son-in-law the Count of Najac in 1880. His remarkable collection of drawings and engravings was dispersed at the Hôtel des Ventes de Paris in May 1880. Bequeathed to Mr. Pierre Amédée Pichot by the Countess of Najac".
