Attributed to Jan PYNAS (1583/84 - 1631) The prophet Elijah and the widow of Zarephath Oil on panel reinforced H_68,5 cm - W_102,5 cm (on the reverse a N° 62 in black paint; old restorations) Provenance: - Sale Paris, hotel Drouot, Me Tajan, 26 March 1999, N° 36 (attributed to Pynas) - Sale Sotheby's London, 29 October 1998, N° 105 (follower of Pynas). Note: The subject is taken from the Bible, in the first book of Kings. At the urging of Yahweh, Elijah arrives at the gates of Zarephath and asks a widow for food and drink, to which she replies, "Long live Yahweh, your God! I have nothing cooked, I have only a handful of flour in a pot and a little oil in a jug, and here I am gathering two pieces of wood so that when I return I can prepare this for myself and my son: we will eat and then die! Encouraged to trust Yahweh, she shares her meager resources with Elijah. In return, her pot of flour never runs out and she lacks nothing.1 Kings 17:7-24 Expert : Cabinet TURQUIN _ eric.turquin@turquin.fr Lot visible by appointment with Cabinet Turquin until 08/06/22
