Note :
Caroline Bonaparte (1782 - 1839) Napoleon's younger sister, she received a rudimentary education from her family, but entered Madame Campan's boarding school for young girls. She had several encounters with Murat, aide-de-camp to her brother Napoleon, initially as a reciter, before he agreed to their marriage in 1800. Her life was divided between Paris and Italy. With the advent of the Empire, she, like her sisters, received the title of Imperial Highness. In 1805, the couple purchased the Palais de l'Élysée, and in 1806, Murat received the Grand Duchy of Berg from the Emperor. In 1808, Murat became King of Naples and the Two Sicilies. The Queen helped develop local manufactures, looked after the education of Neapolitan girls, and promoted French art, especially fashion. In 1809, the Murat couple attended the divorce of Napoleon and Josephine. She escorted Marie-Louise of Austria to Paris. In the King's absence, Caroline was Regent of the Kingdom. On his return from Elba, Murat joined Napoleon. Caroline was taken prisoner by the Austrians, then evacuated to Trieste and finally to Austria. After Murat's execution, she remained in Austria, while her children moved to the United States in 1822 and 1824. Thanks to King Louis-Philippe, she was able to return to France and settle in Florence, where she died at the age of 57.
