GUENEBAULT, Jean - Lot 60
GUENEBAULT, Jean Le Réveil de l'ancien tombeau de Chyndonax, Prince des Vacies, Druides, Celtiques, Dijonnois avec les cérémonies des anciennes sépultures, briefuement clairement raportées A Paris, Jean Daumalle, 1623, in-8, late 18th century full calf, smooth spine, decorated (grotesque irons), XVI, 176, XVI pp. 2 engraved plates, one of which folding. Some contemporary notes in pen. Full-page engraved coat of arms by the author's son, François Guenebault, bearing the motto "On a maintenu la Bourgogne, et mis en paix ceste coronne, qui nous a donné ce trésor: c'est le berger de l'âge d'or" ("We have maintained Burgundy, and put in peace this crown, which has given us this treasure: it is the shepherd of the golden age"). Caillet 4819 gives the 1621 original with a slightly different title, as does Dorbon 5940, which adds: "Contient de nombreux documents sur les enterrements, les incinérations et sépultures chez les différents peuples de la terre." While the author's main concern is to list all these practices throughout the world, he goes into greater detail on the rituals of the Druids, their beliefs, their science, their various customs and their language. Equal attention is devoted to the various rituals of the Egyptians. Overall, this volume embraces all the symbolism of funeral practices and their extensions, all the symbolism that goes to make up these many and varied rituals. Engraved bookplate of Armand Gustave Houbigant, engraver, designer, historian and antiquarian, son of perfumer Jean-François Houbigant.
