MICHELET, Jules La sorcière Paris, E.Dentu, collection Hetzel, November 1862, in-12, paperback, XXIV, 460 pp. First cover stained and fragile, top of spine missing. Only two known copies remain of the original 1862 Hachette edition. Caillet 7528: "On the very day it went on sale, M. Templier (lawyer Émile Templier, co-manager of Hachette) became alarmed - somewhat belatedly, to be honest - at a passage in the preface, and with authority had all copies ready for delivery withdrawn, and the covers and titles bearing the Hachette name scrapped. Dentu repurchased the edition in sheets, had cartons made up for the passages that had frightened Mr. Templier, and put the book on sale under the date November 1862" This is the edition published by Dentu on the same date, constituting the first edition.
