[NOSTRADAMUS] GUYNAUD, Balthasar - Lot 89

[NOSTRADAMUS] GUYNAUD, Balthasar La concordance des prophéties de Nostradamus avec l'Histoire depuis Henri II jusqu'à Louis le Grand. The life and apology of this author. Ensemble, quelques essais d'explications sur plusieurs de ses autres prédictions, tant sur le présent que sur l'avenir. Paris, Jean Cochard, 1710, in-12, full contemporary basane, ribbed spine, decorated, XXXVIII, 418 pp. with engraved frontispiece portrait. Boards slightly worn, pale brown spots at the bottom of four leaves. Caillet 4882 for an identical edition published by Morel the same year. Guaita 1921. Dorbon 2059, for the original 1693 edition, which does not include this new revised, corrected and expanded edition with new prophecies and explanations: "In the first part, Guynaud retraces the life of the author of the Centuries and violently attacks his opponents, in particular Gassendi, Bouche, Florimond de Rémond and Antoine Goullard, sieur de Pavillon. In the second part, he seeks to prove that all prophecies have been fulfilled. Finally, in the last part, he gives an interpretation of the prophecies of times that were not yet past." The bibliographies as a whole fail to mention, however, that on numerous occasions the author testifies to his interest in, and knowledge of, the doctrines of symbolism and practices of the alchemical field, about which he seems to have gathered accurate information from: from "an illustrious personage who is much enlightened on these kinds of sciences and who testified to me that he believed that this incombustible oil, this potable gold, with which he claims one can rejuvenate and prolong one's life, could just as easily be made with the quintessence of the head of a reddest squirrel, a dove, a crow : that if the Philosophers seem to contradict each other on this point, they all agreed on the subject of their virgin earth, which they used to achieve their great purpose. "
