PORPHYRY [BURIGNY] - Lot 101

PORPHYRY [BURIGNY] Traité de Porphyre, touchant l'abstinence de la chair des animaux ; avec la vie de Plotin par ce philosophe, et une dissertation sur les Génies par M. de Burigny. Paris, De Bure, 1747, in-12, full contemporary marbled calf, spine ribbed, ornamented, 498, VI pp. Slight wear to headpieces. Ownership stamp on upper corner of title page. French translation by Jean LEVESQUE POUILLY de BURIGNY including a short biography of Porphyry, a life of Plotinus, his Master, and an essay dealing more specifically with angelology. Caillet 8840; Guaita 855 and 1998 "This treatise by Porphyry is no less than a very profound book of occultism [...] It contains very particular notions, notably on the fluidic link that attaches souls to their corporeal remains and on the abuse that Black Magicians know how to make of this posthumous affinity for their evil deeds." Very rare. Missing from Dorbon, who offers only the "Traité de théologie payenne".
