EMERY, Father Pierre - Lot 40
EMERY, Father Pierre Dissertations on the Prolegomena of Uvalton [Walton], very useful to all who wish to hear Holy Scripture. Followed by Traité des Hébraïsmes. Followed by Traité des Proverbes choisis de la Sainte Ecriture. Lyon, 1699, in-8, full contemporary basane, spine ribbed and ornamented, VIII, 490, II pp. Epidermure on 1st cover, some foxing, stamp of the archives of the Oratoire de la Société des Jésuites de Lyon. Overall a good copy. Caillet 3551 "A work of the greatest rarity and of the highest interest to Kabbalists, for it discusses at length letters, their origin, the Hebrew language, its transformations, its ancient characters, the Keri Ketib massera, the Kabbalah and the different versions of the Bible. It contains a treatise on Hebraism and Sacred Scripture." The absence of a call number in Caillet's notice seems to indicate that this work did not appear in the Bibliothèque Nationale catalog, nor in the Guaïta, Sépher or Ouvaroff catalogs. It is also missing from Dorbon. The extreme importance of this study was not lost on Abbé Migne, who refers to it. It should also be noted that Volney, author of the famous text "Les Ruines" devoted to the study of religious origins, in a parallel approach to that of Fabre d'Olivet, referred to our work in his lesser-known text: "Histoire de Samuël, inventeur du Sacre des Rois", noting Father Emery's judicious remarks and research on the true pronunciation of the divine Name (Elahim, Jehovah, Ïahouah). Emery of course cites Galatin, Philo, Origen and others.
